Honeycomb in our coconut farm.
Honey harvesting from honey comb in our coconut farm. It was a beautiful half-moon day in the mid end of march 23rd 2020 where family members gathered together at our farm house which is at Malagapadi Village, Harur,Tamilnadu for a vacation. When my father-in law went to irrigate the farm, he found 4 honey combs under the stone fence. This is how the mission of harvesting Honey from honey comb is started on that day.
Usually the taste and types of honey differs depends upon the place and kind of trees from where it’s been collecting like honey harvesting from forest is called forest honey, if harvesting by beekeepers from honey box is called farm honey, since its collected from stone fence our Native people calls its as Kallukattu Thenkoodu.
Processes of harvesting also differs. Here we used
Cut and collect the honey combs
Squeeze or crush the honey combs and filter it with a cheese cloth or strainer.
Honey can be categorized as raw or processed. Raw honey is a more natural form which we store as it is once collected from honey comb. Processed honey is the one to boil and store for longer shelf life. Always advised to store honey in a glass container.
